Slowly Learning

It's very easy to tell when the children did not get to go out for recess. They are absolutely bouncing off the walls. I can't blame them though; instead of running off a bunch of energy outside they are forced to sit on a hard floor in the library and watch Clifford for a half hour. I would be going insane too. This experience is definitely allowing me to pick up on some tricks that I will use in my future teaching. For example, my CT would always set up the daily station that I run with a box full of pencils. My groups will only have 4 students in them at most. So what ends up happening is a large portion of the lesson is lost with students trying to find the "best" pencil to write with. Plus a bunch of the pencils usually end up on the floor. To solve this problem, I simply only put 4 pencils in the box. This way they each have 1 pencil to take care of and there isn't even an option otherwise. It seems basic but it actually has solved a lot of problems for me. Last few days, here we come!

  1. I have noticed a few things in my classroom that I think could be done better as well. I hope when it's my classroom I will be able to see these things as clearly as I do from the outside looking in. The nice thing is getting all these ideas and having the ability to improve them!

  2. I could not agree more about recess. Watching a movie does NOT seem like a good substitute for running around and playing outside. It would be so much better if there was a way to let them work off some energy in the gym.

  3. There were quite a few things that I would change in my CT's classroom, but thats part of the experience! It helps you think about what you would do in the situation. For example, I am sure we have all picked up on behavioral corrections we would and would not use. It is so benificial for us to get this time in the field so that we can see these ideas and improve them before we manage our own classrooms.
