Read Aloud
Today I had my first Read Aloud. I had a little trouble getting the student's attention, but I was happy with how they engaged themselves in the story and picked up some patterns. My CT encouraged us to read books to the kindergarten students that dealt with counting, adding/subtracting, or any patterns. I read "Fish Eyes: A Book You Can Count On," which included all three. I was impressed at how well the students were able to count up to 22 fish and were able to add one from each page. In a way, I thought it was even easier reading to children as opposed to classmates because they became more involved and really thought long and hard about any questions I had for them. I thought it was very beneficial for my CT to bring a book that he/she could tie in to a math lesson. Right after I was done reading, the CT worked on simple addition and patterns on the whiteboard. I was more than happy to help out with a lesson!

Glad to hear your read aloud went well! I am nervous about my first read aloud, more about how to get the students attention like you had mentioned. My CT also wants us to connect our book to a lesson, which she usually helps out with, but we initiate the lesson plan and activity. Good luck with your future read alouds!

ReplyDeleteWhen I did my first read aloud I was nervous, as you were, about the participation and engagement from the kindergarteners, but the kindergarteners were great for me too. They were very engaging and wanted to learn. I also did a math/counting book as well. It went well for me too. Good luck with the rest of your field experience and read alouds!
